With reference to the theoretical frameworks of English Linguistics, Interpretive Semiotics, Pragmatics and Cognitive Linguistics, the course will address the translation of affect at each level of the language system – phonology (prosody, phonosymbolism), morphology (e.g. alteratives, deictic forms), syntax (e.g. emphatic constructions), lexis (e.g. adverbials, idiomaticity, metaphoric expressions) – and of the text/discourse dimension – (speech acts, pragmatic inferences). Data will be mainly retrieved from British and American filmography.

Classes will comprise traditional lectures, discussion of readings, and in-class analyses of specific phenomena and their translation.
